New Scholarship!
BCALA-CT Dr. Spencer G. Shaw Scholarship

The BCALA-Connecticut Affiliate would like to announce a scholarship in honor of Dr. Spencer G. Shaw. Dr. Shaw is a retired public librarian, educator and world renowned expert on storytelling and library services to children. He was also the first African American Librarian to be hired at the Hartford Public Library in 1941(more about Dr. Shaw). The scholarship will be available to a Connecticut resident and African-American student accepted in an MLS degree program from an ALA accredited Master’s Program in Library and Information Studies.  The $500 award will be given for the first time this Spring at the Connecticut Library Association annual 2008 conference. The Deadline for submission is March 30, 2008 .

SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT: 2008 CLA MLS and LTA Scholarships
Each year CLA’s Career Recruitment Committee offers scholarships to CT residents who are enrolled in MLS or LTA degree programs. This year up to two MLS scholarships in the amount of $1,500.00 and 2 LTA scholarships in the amount of $700.00 each will be available. Materials must be submitted by February 1, 2008 in order to receive consideration. In addition to the monetary award, scholarship winners receive a CLA membership as well as free registration and lunch at the 2008 CLA Annual Conference.

Application forms may be submitted via E-mail by clicking the “Submit by Email” button at the top of the form. The information will be sent as an email attachment with an .xml file extension. When you have completed the application form it is strongly recommended you print a copy for your records. Alternatively, the form may be filled out, printed and sent via US Mail to the address specified on the application form.

Spectrum Initiative 
The Spectrum Initiative's major drive is to recruit applicants and award scholarships to American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students for graduate programs in library and information science.  The ALA Spectrum Scholarship provides $5,000 scholarships to a number of eligible recipients each year.

Latino Scholarships: "The 2003-2004 National Directory of Scholarship, Internships, and Fellowships for Latino Students publication" from the the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, it is the only publication available in the United States that includes a comprehensive list of scholarships, internships, and fellowships targeting Latino students. It is a great resource for Latino high school, college, and graduate students searching for ways to finance their higher education and/or looking for leadership development opportunities to enhance their educational experience.
